The Distance I Walked for You

The Distance I Walked for You
I walked distances
I never thought my feet could carry,
not because the road was short,
but because somehow,
you made every mile worth arriving at.
I wrote you letters—
so many that my thoughts
began to sound like ink,
each page carrying pieces of me
I could never say aloud.
I did things for you
I wouldn't have done for myself,
gave efforts I had never learned to give,
and offered pieces of my time,
my patience,
my heart,
as though loving you
was reason enough to forget my own limits.
I lied for you.
I defended you
even when defending you
meant standing alone.
I dedicated myself to you
with a kind of certainty
I had never known before.
I committed myself
not only to who you were,
but to the person
I believed we could become together.
And somewhere along the way,
I stopped imagining a life
that ended with me alone.
I imagined a home.
Your laughter somewhere in the kitchen.
My name beside yours.
Photographs on the walls.
Small footsteps running through the rooms.
Children calling for us
when the morning was still young.
I imagined growing old with you—
not in some perfect story,
but in an ordinary life
that was ours.
I imagined telling you everything:
the things I wanted to accomplish,
the places I wanted to see,
the dreams I was afraid to say aloud,
the life I wanted to build.
And in every version of that future,
when I asked myself
who I wanted beside me,
it was always you.
Perhaps that is what hurts the most.
It wasn't only you that I loved.
It was the life
I had already begun building
inside my head.
A life made of
long walks,
unfinished letters,
quiet sacrifices,
defending you,
choosing you,
and believing—
perhaps too deeply—
that one day
all those roads I walked
would eventually lead me home.
And home,
in every future I imagined,
was you.
But it all changed
the moment you told me
that perhaps, we were never meant to last.
And I remember
how the distance began—
not in miles,
but in the spaces
between your words.
Our talks grew shorter,
our calls quieter,
lasting no longer
than the turn of a glass
before everything settled
back where it belonged.
I kept reaching for
the person you used to be with me,
while you were already
learning how to let me go.
And then came the time
I feared without knowing
I feared it.
The time I couldn't see coming,
couldn't understand,
couldn't prepare my heart for.
The time
when I expected nothing
because I still believed
there was something left
to expect.
And somehow,
I unexpected the expected—
the ending I knew
was possible,
but never believed
would become ours.
After all the roads I walked,
all the letters I wrote,
all the things I gave
that I never gave myself,
I never imagined
the hardest distance
would be the one
between us.
And perhaps that is
what hurts the most:
I was prepared
to spend a lifetime
finding my way toward you,
but I was never prepared
for the day
you became the direction
I could no longer follow.
