Trigger warning

Terminal illness, spousal loss, heavy grief.

We didn't get October's church,

Or bells to mark the day,

Just fairy lights on metal stands

And vows we had to say.

You wore your veil upon the sheets,

I held your quiet hand,

And promised you my whole life's love,

Beside an IV stand.

Twelve hours passed like nothing more,

The morning brought the chill.

I said "I do" to love you forever,

As, I always will.

The monitors have gone to sleep,

The fairy lights stay on.

I kiss your forehead one last time.

Before the quiet dawn.

I walk the hallway all alone,

The suit still on my chest,

And carry home to empty space,

Your unused wedding dress.
